SCHEME OF TESTING AND INSPECTION

An inspection and testing department is maintained which is suitably equipped and staffed where tests and inspection as laid down in the ISS are carried out.

 

RAW MATERIAL RECEIVED : The chemical composition of the raw material received is ensured conforming of the finished steel wire to IS : 7887-1975 in the context of his procession methods and techniques. Supplier’s test certificate for the material received is properly maintained.

  • A record is maintained showing the quantity of raw material received and the products manufactured from each consignment.
  • Zinc conforming to at least grade Zn 98 specified in IS: 209-1966 is used for the purpose of galvanising.

 

LEVEL OF CONTROL : Inspection and tests as indicated in table are carried out on all quantities of steel wire manufactured.

On the basis of inspection and test results, decision regarding the conformity or otherwise of the wires to the specification is taken as indicated below:

 

DIMENSIONS: Every coil is tested for dimension as given in the table. Those found not conforming are not marked.

 

TENSILE TEST: The tensile test is carried out in accordance with IS : 1521-1972 on  every fifth coil.

Periodic calibration of tensile testing machines is done.

 

WRAPPING TEST : Wire smaller than 5mm Dia is subjected to wrapping test in accordance with IS: 1775-1961. The wire shall withstand without breaking, or splitting being wrapped weight times round its own diameter and subsequently straightened. Wrapping test is carried on every fifth coil.

 

BEND TEST : Wire of 5mm dia and over is subjected to bend test. The wire shall withstand being bent through an angle of 90 round a former of diameter equal to twice its own diameter without breaking or splitting. Bend test is carried out on every fifth coil.

 

COATING TEST : The galvanized coating of steel wire conform to the requirements of heavy coating given in IS : 4826-1979. The test is carried out on every fifth coil.

 

FREEDOM FROM DEFECTS : All finished wires are well and cleanly drawn to the dimensions specified. The wire are sound, free from splits, surface flaws, rough jagged and imperfect edges and other harmful surface defects.
